Many individuals infected with multidrug resistant tuberculosis remain asymptomatic for years or even a lifetime. Autophagy of intracellular bacteria has been a proposed explanation of the latent state. Intracellular bacterium in the autophagosome, while unable to replicate, may not be not destroyed. This project would explore methods for stimulating autophagy in the presence of antibiotics targeting the intracellular bacterium housed within the autophagosome.
