Description

The UCSF Fresno Family Medicine Residency is a dynamic program which has graduated more than 350 residents since its inception in 1970.  It is a model for community-based training, balancing service and education needs for a large multi-cultural underserved population.  UCSF Fresno offers outstanding ambulatory and inpatient care, including obstetrics, in a variety of settings.  The program is distinguished by its urban and rural family health centers, and by its weekly educational half-days covering behavioral science, family medicine, geriatrics, and procedural skills topics.

UCSF Fresno residents receive a wealth of clinical experience in a range of settings.  Residents work at Community Regional Medical Center (CRMC) caring for a large multi-cultural, indigent population.  Family medicine residents also obtain training at Adventist Medical Center-Reedley, Adventist Medical Center-Selma, Kaiser Permanente Medical Center-Fresno, and Veteran’s Administration Central California Health Care System (VA).

Adventist Medical Center-Reedley provides all of our residents with a unique rural birthing center experience including operative obstetrics in a rural hospital administered by Adventist Health.  Care is also provided to continuity patients at Adventist Medical Center-Selma, a rural hospital adjacent to our family health center in Selma.

In addition to the experiences described above, all UCSF Fresno Family Medicine residents gain experience at a variety of community-based training sites.  Rotations in community medicine, advocacy and leadership, and ambulatory procedures among many others contribute to resident training.  UCSF Fresno residents benefit from behavioral medicine training, an individualized learning program to pursue specific interests, and dedicated time for an integrated series of educational presentations and didactics on various clinical, behavioral and multi-cultural topics.  Training as certified providers in Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, and Neonatal Resuscitation are required components of the program, and residents are provided the opportunity for certification in Advanced Trauma Life Support.

UCSF Fresno residents complete a scholarly and quality improvement project during their three years of training.  Residents receive extensive support and individualized expert assistance for their projects by family medicine research faculty and staff.  They present their project to their peers and members of the UCSF Fresno academic community at the end of their three years of training.  Residents have multiple opportunities for regional and national dissemination work that is encouraged by the program.

All residents receive the latest medical education software applications for smart devices in order to assist them in referencing commonly encountered diseases as well as treatment guidelines for bacterial and fungal infections.  Technical support for computer hardware and software is readily available.

UCSF Fresno has a strong administrative infrastructure which allows residents and faculty to concentrate on learning and caring for patients.  Clinical and administrative personnel dedicated to UCSF Fresno Family and Community Medicine assist with residency scheduling, coordination, research and grants, practice management issues and providing key quality assurance and utilization feedback to residents.

UCSF Fresno graduates are physicians who are confident in their knowledge and skills in all areas of family medicine and practice in a variety of rural and urban settings and as health care advocates for the populations they serve.  We look for people to join our team who seek an all-inclusive approach to training in family medicine and are prepared to become tomorrow’s health care leaders.
