The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Fellowships program was designed to allow midcareer health professionals and behavioral and social scientists to experience a one-year residency in Washington, D.C., working for a member of Congress on health policy.Dr. Sokolove will participate fully in national health policy formation during the 12-16 month residential experience in the nation's capital. He will begin the fellowship in Washington, D.C., in September 2012, for an intense three and one-half month orientation arranged by the Institute of Medicine (IOM). Following orientation, he will take on a full-time work assignment for up to one year. This assignment is usually in a congressional office or committee where he will be expected to develop legislative proposals, arrange hearings, meet with constituents and other stakeholders, and engage in a wide variety of high level forums and events. Continued leadership development activities may be supported after the residential period with remaining funds for up to 12 additional months. Deliverables will include the preparation of a formal presentation to the IOM on a policy-oriented topic in which he has been engaged. Fellows are expected to use the experiences, leadership skills, and relationships gained through the D.C. experience to improve health, health care and health policy at the national, state and/or local levels.
