The Viral Reference Lab and Repository Core was established in recognition of both a domestic and international industry  need to rapidly address new and emerging infectious disease issues primarily affecting transfusion  medicine. Over the years the focus of this department has changed. The department is now more of a service department and as such the sole recipient and distributor of specimens coming into and leaving  Blood Systems Research Institute. The core collaborates extentively with UCSF researchers.
