HIV is the major transfusion-transmissible infection in Africa where an estimated 5-10% of new HIV cases are ascribed to unsafe blood transfusion. Although frequently cited, the validity of this statistic is uncertain. We sought to determine a contemporary estimate of the contribution of unsafe blood transfusion to HIV incidence in Africa
