A Self-Care Intervention for Hispanic Patients with Heart Failure

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholars program was designed to increase the stature and academic standing of nursing faculty and draw more nurses to teaching careers by creating a cadre of national leaders in academic nursing through career development awards to outstanding junior nursing faculty.The purpose of this randomized controlled trial is to determine whether a culturally appropriate, psycho-educational intervention will improve knowledge of heart failure issues, self-care behavior and health care utilization in Hispanic patients with heart failure. A bilingual/bicultural nurse will provide the educational intervention that includes telephone follow-up. Outcomes will be examined for 12 months after the intervention is completed.
